1866 3c Nickel RPD but which variety?
This is the second, of three varieties, I found in a group of twenty two I purchased. I sure hope there are some 3c nickel variety collectors here that can point me towards the correct variety numbers.

Here's the link to the first one (1865 FS 304?) I posted.

The secondary doubling is in the lower loop of the 8 and the top of the last 6. The last 6 might even be tripled.

There is a decent clash remnant as an obverse marker in the field just above the last 6.

Enjoy and let me know if you have an idea on the variety.

For everyone on the edge of their seat on this thread, the suspense will just have to continue.

After checking Allan Gifford's reference book at the Newman Numismatic Portal, I can't seem to find a match. Some of the 19 total, including the proof one, were close but none had the "horizontal" curves in the loops of the 8.
Unfortunately, other reference material seems to all be in book form.
I'm sure there is a variety number for this 1866.

I'm going to reach out to Kevin Flynn, who has written a reference book and is a member here, as well as Gary Rosner, who garnered special mention in Allan Giffords book. Hopefully they can provide some guidance or insight.

This one's a nail biter folks.
Meanwhile, here's a few clearer images.

Well, I couldn't reach Mr. Flynn but I was able to contact Gary Rosner about the 1866. He has a site on these varieties and is thanked by Allan Gifford in his book.

Mr. Rosner was very helpful and checked his reference books and notes. He couldn't find this 1866 in any of them and confirmed it is a new variety.

He also added: "Now here is the challenge, find a second example to confirm the variety!".
Yikes! One finally pops up after 158 years, but a second one is needed to confirm the variety.

Anyone have a spare then can lend me?

Cool find. I wouldn't say it's unheard of to find a new variety in a series like this. Shield nickels are similar where there are undoubtedly varieties still out there that haven't been documented. Either way though pretty neat to find one that hasn't been recorded yet.

Thanks guys.
It is always fun to be able to confirm a variety but it's a real kicker when it's a new one.
