"The Ultimate Guide to U.S. Three Cent Nickels: 1865 to 1889" by Allan Gifford, 2003 @ the Newman Numismatic Portal https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555545
(This variety is on page 215 at the link above.)

Well, it seems there aren't many collectors of these 3c nickel varieties, including me. That might mean they could be fun to pursue, since there isn't much competition.

I'll share a little of what I've learned looking for my varieties, for anyone that's interested.
-Proof and business strike coins were produced.
-Proof varieties will have a P and business strikes will have a B after the date, followed by the variety number and then a letter, depending on the stage.
-1884 & 1885 are the key dates (1883 & 1886 are close behind)

This is the third variety I found in a group of 22 I picked up at a pawn shop for only $5 each. Not a bad price.

1869 3c Nickel, (#1869 B04c)
This B04 variety is neat because it has a third "6" rotated CCW about 45 degrees. Unfortunately, with my "c" stage coin, the rotated "6" is indistinguishable because of the stage.

This variety type in Allan Giffords book is a mouthful:
"Repunched Date, Doubled Die Reverse, Triple Clashed Obverse Die on Double Clashed Reverse Die & Triple Clashed Reverse Die on Repaired Doubled Clashed Reverse Die."
Basically, it has a repunched date, is a DDR, & has a lot of clashing going on. This coin is a late stage coin, hence the "c" designation at the end.

One of the better repunched dates in the series. Thank you for sharing. No one likes them, but that's ok because it leaves more for those of us that do

Whaaaaat! Someone does like them! But you're right, apcol258, about lack of "competition" for them.

Since you like these 3c nickels, take a look at the 1866 in the group of 22, in this link.

I reached out to Gary Rosner about the 1866 in the link above. He has a site on these varieties and is thanked by Allan Gifford in his book. Mr. Rosner was very helpful and checked his reference books and notes. He couldn't find that 1866 in any of them and confirmed it is a new variety.

He went so far as to add: "Now here is the challenge, find a second example to confirm the variety!".

Yikes! One finally pops up after 178 years but a second one is needed to confirm the variety. "Me thinks" I'll be pushing up daisies by then. LOL

Anyways, these were a nice diversion from my usual Lincoln cents and I
I'll be keeping an eye out for more. (Sorry about increasing the competition for these by "one-fold". )

Thanks guys and I agree about limited interest, Coinfrog.

But it's a relatively inexpensive series that holds surprises for those willing to look.
