Unfortunately, this is not my coin. I am deciding if I should bid on it...if there is a good margin of safety. All pictures are similar angles.

Well based on what you do have to work with I would take a shot at AU-58. There are some minor hairlines on the third photo showing just a touch of wear. There may be more so I would error on the side of caution. In hand it may be a lot better...or not.

Thank you. To me it also looks like AU-5X, at least based on the photos.

Tried to zoom in on the R. Do not see the omega mark.

I was reading about the fake $3 after @IndianGoldEagles post. And this is a very valid concern! I am getting myself more information on this.

I'll guess AU.
Errers and Varietys.

its tough to photo gold but not one straight on shot concerns me. there is some imbedded grime on the obv on the rim by UNITED leading me to an AU58 grade if the coin is authentic. I'm not into gold so can't comment on authentication

And update on this coin and the other similar one here: http://goccf.com/t/466042I decided not to bid on this coin, because of the estimated consensus grade of AU-5X. Well, I would have bid for up to about $2000, but the bidding went over that even before I decided to place a bid. The coin sold for just over $4000. I decided instead to buy a GSA holder 1883cc (MS-63?) and a GSA holder 1882cc (MS-60?) for $660 total. I hope the photos (taken at an angle) are making these two coins look worse that what they are in real life...but will soon will be able to look at them in person. Will post a separate thread.

Wow, that's something for a raw coin.

@Coinfrog Agree. I am a bit of a risk taker (or novice), but that hammer-price was way over my risk tolerance based on the available photos. Unless the bidder did physically look at it in person before the auction.
