Does anyone know what the rarest Canadian Dollar is?
Not the 1911, as it was not an official Dollar.
And NOT paper money either.

lets see what we can come up with here...
oh, I can see you all running to get Trends.now... or charlton...mmmm
maybe.....

Fact is, I had one...
it is scarcer than a Henns teeth...
any guesses?
I will post pictures of it later... after we see what it is...

I'm not a coin collector, and even less of a Canadian coin collector, but I wonder if it has to do something with this 1990 loonie...

I would agree with Dollar1948.. it should be the 1948 with the low mintage and all.

For low mintage $1 coins, here's a few:

1969 Silver Dollar (6 known)
2002 Gold Loon (About 29)
1937 Matte Finish (200)
1966 Small Beads (364)

Not Official:

1974 Winnipeg Centennial Double Yoke (Far Left - 1)
1975 Calgary Centennial Upset Dies (1)
1985 New Zealand Obverse Mule (1)
1966 Small Beads (364)
1969 Silver Dollar (6 known)

Official:

2002 Golden Jubalee Gold (Gift to QE - 1)
2003 Voyageur Gold (1)
2003 Golden Jubilee Gold (1)
2002 Gold Loon (About 29)
1939 Matte Finish (110)
1937 Matte Finish (200)
2007 Silver Loon (849)

I would have to say the 2002 Golden Jubilee dollar made out of gold is the "rarest" in that it may never be available to the market. All the rest were or are available to collectors with the exception of the 29 gold loons from 2002 - but its only a matter of time before one of them trades. The 2002 gold loon could be classed as a VIP issue, and so it could be argued that it was not available to collectors at large. The Matte finish dollars could be viewed as varieties, so I will go with the 2007 Silver Loon dollar.

I'm not a dollar collector,I'm hoping its the 69 because I was unaware of it til now,and would love to see a picture. On the other hand I hope it's not the jubilee or voyageur gold because as a collector they would place you in a class of one.

the 1948 canda dollar is the rarest with by mintage of just 18,000, and the priciest of the Canada dollars at around $1500 in MS-60.

Hello again..
since this might be one of my last, if not THE last contributions, I must say that I have learned a lot from all of you.
this subject here was very interesting, as I did not know some of the coins you all guessed actually existed.
Why I posted it was simply to find out more about, and the competition for, the 1985 Canada / NZ mule.
I was aware that there are about 13 around, the 13th being mine which I sold a few months back after aquiring it, together with, EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT, a 1966 small beads Dollar in PL 63 and a die rotated 1948 in MS60... all in one deal overseas.
Most of you probably have not seen a CAN / NZ mule, so here are a couple of pictures...
Yes , it was an expensive coin

and I am interested to hear what you think the pricing should be for it. It is listed in Trends, but forget Trends for rarities, as a rare coin like that does not go by Trends...It goes by supply and demand.....
thanks to all of you for your input....will be searching for other rarities now.
If I am still around in a day or two, then, and only then, will I have a few more very interesting questions for you...

best regards and have a great week

Anyone venture to guess the Grade?
it was sent to ICCS for verification and grading....

How do you know "there are about 13 around"? Is than an estimate or an actual count?

As for price, I am only aware of one trade at about $5,000 for a grade of about EF40 a few years ago. With 13 available, the price could easily be less for the same grade.

LOL, excellant comment here - few folks realize this (even supposedly experienced collectors):

"forget Trends for rarities, as a rare coin like that does not go by Trends...It goes by supply and demand"

And:

"since this might be one of my last, if not THE last contributions"

Hopefully you will keep contributing. Knowlegable collectors that share their insights only benefit the hobby.

And its true, pricing will be all over the place for rare coins.
