Confirmed over on the classic variety coins forum. I'm not sure how to grade this one. I'm thinking maybe 45? The hair and axe both seem better defined than the 45 example on Photograde, but this coin doesn't seem AU. The bands and initials are worn, for example.

i'd say AU50 but I don't think the obv is strong enough so I'm at XF45 also

Any thoughts on that long scratch under the T of Liberty? Is that par for the course at this level of circulation, or would that kick it into Details grade? Not saying I would grade this particular coin, I just want to improve my knowledge.

i don't think it would details the coin for 3 reasons.

1. the scratch is not in a key area of the coin
2. the scratch is not prominent enough
2. typically scratches that appear to be new tend to details the coin. the scratch here is toned over and not recent
