1971-D Eisenhower dollar. Gold leaf? Ruined coin or worth more than a couple of dollars?

Jalama Bound, your Ike was gold-plated at one time. This is done by hucksters who then sell them on TV or newspaper inserts at vastly inflated prices. No collector or numismatic premium associated with it, especially in that condition - just worth face value.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I agree as well. I have seen more than a few of these in my time. I happen to have one courtesy of our own chafemasterj.

That is actually an acceptable option, although I would prefer to keep him.
