*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***I sent a coin to CAC for grading and it came back. The coin is a Lincoln Cent. I now own a 2010 MS67 RD Lincoln Cent graded by CAC and it is their first MS67 RD. Value they gave on my coin is $1,020. That is not the problem PCGS values the coin at $1,800 for the grade. Real trouble arises is NCG values the coin at $75.00. In auction, I see a few of these coins graded by NGC and they go for around $65.00 YIKES! April 20,2024 a PCGS one sold in auction for $1,375 on ebay. No other PCGS coins were sold at auction because there are only 4 graded. Heritage has never sold one that high. Do I take the chance of going to auction with this CAC graded Lincoln Cent. I do not want this coin to sell for 70 or 100 dollars. I hope you see my problem.

You need to check Numismedia and ebay sold values. The grading sites most times have high prices, PCGS for example. Can't you have a minimum selling price at an auction house? John1  |

John1 , $1,375 was highest sold at ebay a couple of weeks ago. Haven't checked Numismedia yet,thanks. Just checked and no value on MS67 RD Greatcollections is going to email me back as to what to do. Maybe they will do what you said about setting a fixed price on it and if it sells it sells. Thanks again Jown1. Edited by SaturnD51

Have you considered just posting it on ebay with a Buy It Now (plus Make Me An Offer) at your target price, and letting it sit for a month or two? It doesn't really cost you anything to do that. Then if it doesn't sell, you can risk an auction on some venue or another. What are the odds that someone is going to have a burning desire to spend $1000 on a high grade 2010 cent during the same period where you offer the auction? |

I strongly suspect that the PCGS price guide 'value' is being driven high by a handful of Registry Set enthusiasts who are willing to pay moon money for the top graded coins. Keep in mind that PCGS Registry Set rules require that only coins in PCGS holders are eligible for inclusion, as such your CAC graded coin would not be attractive to the few deep pocket folks who might be looking to add to their PCGS sets. If my logic holds, your CAC MS67RD cent would likely be valued at auction much closer to the NGC price. I agree with Brandmeister - put it up on ebay and see what happens. |

I think that's an insane valuation based on an expectation of registry-mania for top pop.
I don't know how many people are really competing in the CACG registry. There are only 13 sets registered for the multi-registry version. one is 78% complete, the next contestant is 6% complete. There are just 8 CAC only sets, with the top one at 22% complete.
There are 209 sets at PCGS and the top positions are DL Hansen and Andy Hansen...
IMNSHO the valuation will be a lot closer to the $60 guide.

Maybe set a reasonable reserve price it shouldn't scare away serious buyers that's just my personal opinion

 Now with everyone's comments I probably do not have something worth auction. I guess I will just send it to Greatcollections for a set starting price and if no one bites, then it goes into the safe,lol. Thanks for the comments everyone. |

You may not have the value on this coin 'yet' but in years to come that high grade will help you out. just be patient

PCGS intentionally keeps the 67 population low. There are only 4 in 67 and 319 in 66. The $1800 value is based on 4 coins and PCGS protects those 4 by ensuring no new coins enter, even if you sent your coin for a cross-over it'd come back 66 or 66+. Just my opinion.

I checked and the coin is top pop at CAC. I am going to Greatcollection auction with starting bid at $700.00. I believe doing it this way is the best. Just got a batch of coins graded at CAC and boy oh boy are they brutal on grading,wow. I thought I had a ms68 and they saw 63. Wow they take off for small polishing marks on the Lincoln Cent you can hardly see with a strong Lupe. My beautiful Kennedy half 1997-D was a beauty but had a very small cut on the reverse and they marked it AU with detail. Well I am not complaining but now I am kind of seeing what they are looking for in grading. I can not blame them for wanting the best coin grading. |
