Aww, after reading your title I thought this thread might be about Taco Bell . . .

That is pretty bad though. How does that happen to a coin? Is it part of the production process? or does it occur in circulation somehow?

I think poor washing with poor plating allows gas bubbles to escape to the surface. It's pretty common, but this is the most extreme case I've seen.

I've seen it many times, 1983 and 84 show this often.
