Hi fellow numismatists,
I have an interesting 1902 British penny , it appears to have a dot between the N and E of 'ONE' , and although there is corrosion around it , it is above the field, any thoughts on this please.
I would very much appreciate any input

Since it's incuse, I think it's damage.

nope not a proper 'dot'. You say it is raised above the field? or is it level with the field and the corrosion around it is incuse?

Yes, it looks like corrosion damage.

Whenever a "dot" is surrounded by corrosion, it's generally assumed that the dot, whether raised or incuse, has been caused by the same thing that caused the corrosion.

Thank you Coinfrog and Sap, I may send it to The Royal Mint Museum just for clarification.

Accidental dot formed from corrosion. Or another way of looking at it. If you put all the corrosion back to before it started that area would be flat and normal with no dot. the corrosion has formed an island where the metal has been eaten away :)

Obviously a corrosion issue, sending it to The Royal Mint is a waste of time.
