Proof Jefferson Nickel 1981-S: Type 1 Or 2?

Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6657 Posts	Posted 06/21/2024 12:30 pm PCGS article on Type 1 and 2 mint marks for 1981-S proofs PCGS images 1981-S nickels Type 1 PCGS images 1981-S nickels Type 2 I have grappled with this 1981-S type 1 vs. 2 mint mark question before and reached no conclusion. This is a unexamined proof nickel fresh off ebay. Type 1 or 2? It is especially confusing because when I look at the PCGS catalogs, there are coins that I think might be incorrectly listed as 1 or 2. Certainly the PCGS quarter article has two crystal clear and different S mint marks. The TrueView examples are not so clear cut. Was the Mint still hand punching mint marks in 1981?
