I'm interested in whether both the small anomalies on opposite sides of this nickel are caused by the same thing and what that would be. I'm speaking of the I in IN and the E in E Pluribus on reverse. And while looking, does the D mintmark look normal or no?

could be - the damage is at the same location on both sides - it could have been pinched there somehow.
