I have been through the most intense history and geography lesson you could ever imagine with all these coins I have. I still have 30,000 or so small and I mean about as big as my pinky nail to go through. I think I am losing my mind! Edited by warjag 04/29/2009 8:46 pm

It's an amazing hobby isn't it. World coins literally opens the whole world to you. Geography, history, language, numerics.
The best thing is there is always more to learn, because there are always so many more coins to collect.
One day I hope to know as much as Sap!

I have to say, even after years of collecting coins of all sorts from ancient to modern, that nothing gives me a thrill like picking up a coin from some obscure country I've never heard of before, then going and researching the place and time of origin of that coin. Coins. They're miniature metallic time capsules.

Warjag explained in his introduction thread that he's sorting through a roomful of foreign coins stockpiled by a coin dealer.

Going through a 20-pound assortment of foreign coins is like going through buried treasure for me. Some of the grubby-looking coins I've discovered have been worth $10-50 apiece. But for me the most useful activity has been "decoding" dates and numbers in languages previously unfamiliar to me - Chinese/Korean/Japanese, Thai, Arabic, even Indian languages. Yep - a real treat.

Yeah, the world coins really are a great way to learn about different countries and the history they hold. The members of CCF never cease to amaze me with their knowledge of other entities and their currencies and I reckon it keeps it very fresh and interesting for me. Sometimes I get a bit bogged down, but it only takes a new coin and a different tangent and I'm off again!
