You all were so helpful with my Ottoman-era coin; I hope someone can help me with this. It looks to be a replica of the commemorative coin produced in recognition of Yuan Shih Kai's rise, to Emperor of China, in 1916. If it is...it is not very good. However, it is really well made. Although it's a yellowish color, it's not gold or silver...I suspect some nickle/copper mix. The pictures don't do it justice...the obverse/reverse images are very sharp and the reeding are very well defined. Is it some kind of common medal given out in commemoration of the event? Anyone know? It's been in my family for at least 40 years. Thanks again. Alfred Image: 100_3292.jpg26.92 KB Image: 100_3294.jpg53.27 KB

... So far the details (especially in the center) look clear... Can you take a better, non fuzzy pic?

My inexpert take as well...the facial features are too crude to be original.

Here are a couple of more images. Vanhis: do you know what they were made for? Seems like a lot of trouble for an obvious counterfeit...was there another purpose?

I just sold the one I had. It was silver plated. It was plated by a silver smith in China. It does seem to me that yours in fake.

Thank you all. I was sure it was some kind of "replica"; fake...I just couldn't figure out why someone would go to all the trouble, and expense, to do such a fine job of making a fake...looks better than a lot of authentic coins I've seen.
