Since we just recently discussed whether solid cupronickel Jefferson nickels can have laminations, I thought I would share this random 1947 nickel from my album jar. It's from coin roll hunting, but I didn't notice anything special about it the last few times I've poked through that decade of nickels.

I don't know if the lamination was caused by some kind of bonding problem between the 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy. It all looks like standard gray metal. I would speculate that this lamination is from slag, gas bubbles, impurities, or other contaminants. Somebody like Mike or Silviosi would be much more knowledgeable about the metallurgical specifics.

I am wondering if that second finger of metal through the ear is another lamination. It's running in parallel to the main lamination, which seems correct based on the way laminations form and get rolled into the metal sheets. You can see a band of discoloration stretching out the top of the head.

Yes, appears to be lamination issues on both sides.

Looks like a continuation of the same lamination spread over the surface of the coin. A bad mixing of the alloys when poured into ingots then heated up again to get flattened out.
Have you ever seen anyone roll out a pastry dough on a counter that was covered in flower to keep it from sticking, then fold it over and the folded section would not blend back into the dough again?

Strangely enough, I am now craving a nice pizza pie, pepperoni/sliced sausage.
