ebay cherry pick, sold as an ordinary circulated 1956 Jefferson nickel. The flip entertainingly said "UNC", but the rim has some nicks and is crusted with crud. The coin is soaking in pure acetone right now.

The doubling and tripling is self-explanatory. The spread is easily seen on the top and bottom serifs of E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS.

Very nice!
Good eye to spot that from original seller pics! I would not have seen anything special.

That's been a question on my mind for a while. We had a recent discussion about it here:

http://goccf.com/t/466750&SearchTerms=CPG

For this particular variety, I checked the history on Great Collections. Not many examples had been sold, and all were mint state coins slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS. The prices ranged from $34 to $300+. Predictably, the difference between MS64 and MS66 was huge, probably caused by registry set buyers. UN-predictably, the prices within a given grade varied wildly, with no obvious reason in the coin pictures or auction timing.

However, the same was true about the 1954-S JN DDR FS801 with the crazy steps. Auction prices were all over the place. Combine that with the fact that many times the slabbed coins sold for considerably less than it would currently cost to have them slabbed, graded, attributed. Also, that particular variety sells uncirculated raw on ebay for more than an MS64/65 slabbed coin minus grading fees.

The conclusion I am beginning to reach is that many of these CPG coins are better offered raw on ebay. In essence, you would handle them like a minor doubled die—build a photo documentation package, clearly identify the coin as a specific variety, liquidate it patiently.

My guess on this particular coin would be $20-30 depending on buyer interest, your ebay audience, how long you were willing to wait to sell. But that's a wild guess, it could be a lot less.

Nice separation on this one. Congrats.

I think you have a good strategy going foreword but I know some well-known sellers don't list the variety and then collectors bid it up thinking they've found one no else sees.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

(You might want to flatten out the staples a bit more to prevent scratching other or your fine nickels!

The first thing I do is cut the coin out of the shipping flip. No idea how it was stored, and it's much easier to examine and photograph by itself. It's currently in a folded paper in a plastic flip, awaiting future inspection.
