A 1998 dime struck in Philly with an off-center strike to about the K-2 position. The metal flow lines on the coin are an interesting feature to study, as is the distortion of the date, mint mark and 'JS' designer's initials.* This is also an excellent example of how luster is made up of the reflection of light from the tiny channels of metal flow.

*The initials stand for John Sinnock, who was the 8th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, but there was a rumor that the new Roosevelt dime's initials actually stood for Joseph Stalin and a communist conspiracy theory developed around it.

The next coin designed by John Sinnock was the Franklin half dollar. His initials were changed on that coin from just JS to JRS, to help avoid another possible rumor about the half and to help quell the 'Red Scare' rumors that formed around the dime.

It's interesting to note that the Kennedy half had another communist rumor develop around its designer's initials. Gilroy Roberts stylized GR initials on the bust of Kennedy was said to be a representation of the Hammer and hammer and sickle device of the Soviet Union.

Very nice example of an off center that still retained all the devices.
