I am not entirely sure how to grade this coin. The faces seem in far better condition than the edge. Is the unevenness, pitting, verdigris on the edge due to circulation, or were there impurities in the planchet?

Thanks for the help, guys. I had figured that the coin was low AU or high XF. While it has some metal gleam in the light, it has that dead look to it from rub on the high points.

I agree that it would be a spender, except that it happens to be FS-802, a big ol' doubled die reverse.

If anyone has insights into the edge, I would appreciate that. I have a hard time imagining that it is is AU on the faces, but so chewed up on the edge. But I have an equally hard time imagining that it was struck like that. Is this a known phenomenon?

anytime you get a coin that has that dull silver look the original surfaces are gone. either the coin was cleaned if it looks MS in details or they were removed from just handling in circulation

as for the edge, to me it looks like the coin may have met something like a bunch of small stones. its hard to say how it occurred but it was from the mint. its PMD (post mint damage)
