Hello, I don't typically grade anything and I've only essentially done it 3 times through a friend. I don't plan on ever selling it but I want the full SMS sets slabbed for PC so would rather slab myself for the sake of saying I did, but if they are not worth slabbing ill just buy the best grades I can, from what I can tell they arent all too expensive. But this one does have a nice tone and I'm not sure if the slab will halt the process or would it tone over fully with deeper colors? - The bottom circle I THINK is a notch in the planchet itself, under magnification theres no raised edges around hole and no PMD around the hole itself. Top circle looks like PMD but is just a breast feather divot thats more notable than the ones around it. - The circle is the same as reverse but this one could be PMD as its a line, a very very small line however. Milky look I'm guessing is from the mint pachage it was in? The heavy milk spot is actually a very small dark spot only really noticeable by loupe. Im hoping a 68 as the ones I'm biding on for other years are 68s (2 67s) so would like that general range if it will get it.

the photos are not the best. the original ones there is too much glare to see the surfaces for any wear. the second set obv photo is showing what looks like a circulated coin with rub on the higher points of the devices. especially under the eye, jaw, hair around the ear, neck and high points on the hair. so I don't know which way to go with this one.
on that last obv photo I'm seeing little round spots under the motto and around the date areas. typically these show up from a cleaning where the chemical was not entirely removed or something was splashed on the coin. if you look close at the rim area from K2-K5 particularly you will what appears to be some type of liquid was used
without better photos I'm going with AU details (Cleaned)
you can try the following setup to maybe get better photos with your phone
1. turn off flash 2. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day. Use a black or white background to avoid any reflective color 3. move phone about 3in from coin 4. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus and fills the cameras view finder. if your phone has a portrait selection use that and then press and hold on the coin in the view finder to AF lock it 5. hold phone steady. if you can't then place something on either side of the coin (like books) at that distance and lay phone between them. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring
I'm not into SMS coins so can't comment on whether this one is or if its a business strike. the rims do look like an SMS strike. for business strike the coin would need to grade 67+ or higher to be worth slabbing. if its SMS slabbing costs would exceed the value of the coin even at MS68
once slabbed color enhancement would either slow down or stop completely as its not exposed to any elements

I agree, probably not worth the cost of getting it slabbed, but.... it does appear to have really nice toning.

no, not worth the grading, and the rainbow toning is suspect to me.

Divert your grading fees into purchasing an example already slabbed.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Quote: Divert your grading fees into purchasing an example already slabbed. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Right now, you can buy slabbed coins for many denominations that cost far less than the current grading fees. I understand that you would want to slab a nicely toned coin, but you've already noted multiple deficits on this SMS, and you can probably just buy a cheaper PCGS (or whatever) slab that represents exactly what you want in your collection.

yes a slab'd coin can be found for way way under what the grading fee is. most of my post '64 stuff is graded and indeed I looked for good buys, cheap as a 10 spot for a pr69

just won a 65,66 and a 67 slabbed and graded 36 bucks total. coins alone were 23. starting to upgrade clad years with graded examples.
edit: toned examples get crazy dough, though.
