I came across this in an auction. I have my doubts about it being a real error - it just doesn't look right. No weight is given in the listing.

It looks almost like paint of some sort. Maybe really old fingernail polish? It's like they were trying to make a cameo of Washinton's head. Just thinking out loud.

Perhaps a foreign substance, but in any event not an error, just a spender.

I'm not so sure this isn't some type cladding error.

Notice how soft the strike looks in the copper colored areas? It looks like there is almost no rim to speak of on either side of the coin and the reeding looks like it's rolled over into the fields on each side as well.

If the planchet is missing part of it's copper/nickel layer the strike should look weak overall, right?

The weight is critical to making such a determination, as are better photos, including photos of the edge showing the clad layers.

Given the year is 1965, the first year clad coins were produced, I would expect there to be examples of such hiccups in the manufacturing process floating around out there.

That was a thought I had as well.

The lack of any peeling at the edges and smooth transition between metals are what really made me have my doubts. After all, the coin doesn't look to be that circulated.

I'm thinking some kind of acid damage that reacted with the nickel more than the copper.

PMD of some sort. The "gray" color looks more like paint than nickel metal.

It looks like it has been sandblasted.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
