Cleaned up another Roman but it still has a lot of the hard green crud on it, especially the reverse. I don't fancy picking at it much more in case I damage the coins surface. What's the general opinion? Should I clean this any more... I have flipped it up already because I was happy with the obverse, but keep looking at the reverse trying to weigh up if it's worth scratching the coin to get it completely clean or leave as is.

Thank you,

Kev.

And please remove it from the 2X2 for the new pics.

Often to remove green corrosion from copper without picking you can soak in a solution of sodium sesquicarbonate.

Here are some articles with steps to address so-called "bronze disease."

The solution of mixed sodium carbonate (washing soda) with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in distilled water is easy and inexpensive to make and is a helpful soak to remove green corrosion and stop its progress. The soaking can be done for a few days at room temperature instead of the hot water method described.

Formula for sodium sesquicarbonate solution:
10.6 g of sodium carbonate (washing soda) and 8.4 g of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) dissolved in 100 ml of distilled water

Very distinctive Ticinum style follis
Unfortunate that the reverse has the surface corrosion beneath
I think it best to leave well enough alone
The green lends 'character'
The pitting gives none
Soak in olive oil to darken a bit
But I would leave well enough alone

That is one of the things I was worried about.
Thank you for the links Seeker55, interesting reading.
I will flip him up again and leave well alone.

I have recently tried the wash powder water mixture to try and remove the green with devastating effect as can be seen on the coin pictured below. The soak left the coin stripped of all it's natural colouring and badly pitted so won't be using that method again.

If the green corrosion is hard, not powdery then it's stable and shouldn't get worse. It's difficult to remove without damaging the coin. Underneath the green there may be pits/cavities so it's best left alone in my opinion. If powdery then it's bronze disease and needs to be treated. To stabilize I use a product called Verdi-care. You can get it at Wizard Coin Supply.

livingwater, the green is solid and isn't bronze disease, however, Thank you for the pointer of where to buy that stabiliser. I will be ordering some shortly as I do have a few coins in quarantine with bd.
