I have heard over that coin star machines reject Silver coins. Is this fact or just one of those Urban legends?
I have also heard that coin rolling machine reject silver coins. Yet we hear stories about people finding silver half Dollars in machine rolled coins. I search half dollar rolls and have only found silver coins in customer rolls.

Great question.
I only do know that the Atlantic City slot machines did reject silver coins.

I have been told that since silver does not match the electronic conductivity signature of copper-nickle clad coins that they will be rejected by more modern coin operated machines. As for your roll searches, are you searching Fed rolls or something rolled by a third party service such as Brinks or Wells Fargo? I have had much success with customer rolls and moderate rinds with third party rolls. I have yet to get a fed rolled box, But I here that they are the best to search and they are only $500.00 boxes.

If this is the case, then silver hunters need not search their rolls of halves. They can simply dump them into the bank's coin rolling machines and grab the silver from the reject bin, no?

That's a great idea SJUHawks!

But I guess you'll have to watch that it's a modern (post 2000, maybe?) machine. That way, they're all electronic and surely won't pick up the silver signature.

I'm pretty sure that the counting machines in banks are simply that, counter's. The fancy coin star machines have more bells & whistles. ~ Jim

We are discussing two different critters here- coin counters and coin comparators(which also count). A counter merely counts and everything of a normal size passes through. Coin comparators measure the electrical signature of the metal. A comparator is not designed to just reject silver, the main purpose is to reject slugs and foreign coins but since silver is not a modern circulating composition, they get rejected as well.

Good idea in theory if a bank has a self-serve machine in the lobby. In practice though, most bank counters are behind the front line so your chances of getting the silver back are probably not that great. I am not sure if Coin Stars take halves or not but you still have to put up with that pesky 8.9% service fee or deal with a silly gift card to get full value.

We still have to search the rolls. The coin machine still can't tell the difference from a 2008, or a 1987, or a DDO-74
