*** Title updated to include additional information.***So we actually just recently got a coin shop, a mere 20 min from my home, in the central Louisiana area, however, hours are 10-2 M-F! Despite the limitations on hours of operation, I do get by occasionally, but it's basically one man's collection (at least pieces that he's willing to part with)! He does have a lil $1 basket that will typically have a handful of uncirculated Lincolns, wheat & memorial. So on my last visit, there were 4 uncirculated Wheaties, of which all came to live at my house! This '57 D was a totally different tone than the other 3, with almost an iridescent glow as you hold at different angles! It's really a pretty color, while my pics do not represent the actual luster seen in hand! I guess my question is why the distinct difference, or what's the cause? Is it natural, or can one alter with an artificial method? I included a side by side with one of the other coins that were in the basket, just for color comparison, hopefully the pics will show enough of what I'm trying to describe!

looks ok to me - Copper can take on many different colors depending the environment they were stored in.

CCB, coins can be artificially toned but yours does not appear to be so. By the way, where in Louisiana is this shop?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Yes, appears to have not been caused by deliberate human intervention.

Looks like natural toning to me.

Trace contaminants in the alloy can also produce some surprisingly neon colors over time. Quote: recently got a coin shop . hours are 10-2 M-F! That sounds pretty awesome. =)

I changed the title a bit to include more information. Year/Mint/coin type, then your question, in this order makes it much easier to search for it later on.

Dearborn, did you get a recent promotion to Moderator, or has that fact actually escaped my brain for the last 14 months?

This as others have stated it's natural. I've found a lot of 50s in unc rolls that have this yellow or gold color. Some of them are striped, I call them tiger striped.

Hey sorry, I'm just now getting to see the replies, if yall remember my niece that many of you were so generous towards, who's 14 going on 40 now, but she had a tonsillectomy 5 days ago & not what one would describe as an "ideal" patient! But thank you all for your input and Hondo, it's located in the newly incorporated town and now thriving speed trap of Creola, LA.

I say new, I grew up just down the hill from what is now Creola and it was an area that was largely owned by one man who generously "donated" the land to an Indian tribe, then they built a small casino, after the guy incorporated the area and let the area vote to have beer & alcohol sales! May come as a surprise but the majority of my Parish/county is dry, or can't sell beer or liquor (we're still in the Bible belt), so it was a big deal when it happened, as I was just coming of the age to be able to purchase those items!! So after casino was built, a church was built across the highway! Beside the church and owned by the church, if I'm not mistaken, are a couple strip malls one has a restaurant now & the pastor of this church is a fellow collector and opened the coin shop!
