I'm new to finding error coins. The one pictured here looks like some damage to the planchet before it was struck. I don't see the damage on the raised areas. Please let me know your thoughts.
to CCF I added a few important pieces of information to your title. Also, please try to crop your images better (to the edge of the coin's rim) and a bit larger if you can.
Photos of coins appear much better if you take it from directly above too.
On this coin, it is not a damaged planchet, but rather a struck through gritty grease.
Thank you for the reply. I was taking it at an angle to show the defect better but I do appreciate your advice. I will make sure I take an above photo next time. Is this worth getting graded or are these defects not worth the effort? Thanks
It appears to be Struck Through Grease (or rather, grease and grit compacted into a super hard flake). Such errors are relatively common, and don't carry any premium unless they are huge enough to be fun. Definitely not a coin to grade. You had a good eye to spot it, though.
The compacted grease can also fill letters and devices on the die, leading to missing design elements on the coin.
to the CCF and No premium for this. It's common. It takes a great error to warrant grading. There is no minor error that would pay for itself being graded. Most if not all errors you find in circulation will only carry a slight premium.
