Got this in pocket change today. Of all the 2023 nickels I looked at so far this is the first doubled master die I've seen.

Wow, I'm a little surprised that you've been looking at 2023 Jefferson nickels and had not yet seen Jefferson's morning paper. Of the ones I've checked out, I would say that about two-thirds have that feature.

Whatever that is, it isn't a die chip—that object appears on millions of coins across multiple years. It's some sort of manufacturing mistake or damage to the master die or master hub.

I really believe it is from the master die. As Brand said, it appears quite commonly. There may have been more than one master die produced such as a 1972 cent. I've seen these cents with master hub doubling and cents without the hub doubling.

That begs the question of whether the Mint is currently using multiple master die per year. We know that the feature appears across 2022 and 2023, and also that it does not appear on most 2022 and on some 2023. It could also indicate something as simple as the Mint replacing the master die in late 2022 because it was wearing badly, or that the master die picked up that gouge or dent late in the 2022 hub manufacturing process.

Does it appear on Denver minted nickels at all? That would also tell us something.

Finally started getting some 2024 coins in change and got a Denver nickel that had something similar but much less defined and narrower in height.
