I know the scratch question gets fielded a lot here, but I want to refine my understanding. I have read in multiple places that the Details line for a scratch will move based on the age of a coin, and also the grade of a coin. Mercury dimes are fairly recent, but as this coin is quite circulated. Is the scratch near R sufficient to produce a PCGS Details result?

Scratch or not, this date in this condition is just a bullion coin. Can't generalize beyond that.

I think the scratch would detail it.

If this was a '16-D in the same condition, I'll bet the scratch wouldn't detail it.

No, small scratch on a small coin. Looks bigger than it actually is.

That's a large deep scratch, without a doubt details coin.

Unfortunate. It's an F-502 RPM, and there are only three graded coins at PCGS. It's a 1.00 weight variety registry set coin. Even at VF20-25, this coin would still supply 0.05-0.06 points to a registry set that didn't have an example.

Is there anything that can be done for the coin? For example, blocking off most of the coin faces, and then using it as a pocket piece until that rough metal wears down a bit? Nothing done to the obverse is going to ruin the reference value of the RPM on the reverse.

The scratch will get it a "details" grade.

Negative - you are not going to get rid of that scratch in a natural looking way regardless of what you try in an artificial wear effort.

The coin is what it is ... keep on searching.
