Workers have been removing some toppled and uprooted trees behind some apartments and a house built in the 1940's right down the street from my house. I mosied over to see if anything interesting might have turned up. Unfortunately nothing besides a very vintage crusty engine valve cover. However, I did spot this nickel in the dust nearby. From the color I though it might be a War Nickel but that was not the case.
Posting here so that I'll have the image already uploaded the next time some asks if their coin is a "Black Beauty".

Are you going to have it graded?

The dirt, not the coin. =P

My first thought (before I read your summary) that it was a dug coin.
Nice little find for future teachings...

A classic metal detecting find
Like you said, good to post them from time to time for newer members to see.

I don't think this was a metal detecting find.

It was laying on the surface in dust - a grassless area besides the old apartments that was bone dry due to lack of rain for the last month.
