1971 was the year the UK adopted decimal coinage. On February 15, the decimal halfpenny, penny and twopence entered circulation, and briefly all our bronze coins looked very clean and bright, like this halfpenny!

All remaining British Commonwealth territories and Crown dependencies that still used shillings and pence also switched to decimal currency in 1971, with the exception of Malta and Nigeria, which waited until 1972 and 1973 respectively. The Channel Islands issued their own new bronze coins like this Guernsey penny:

Gibraltar didn't issue a set of its own circulating coins in 1971, but its annual crown showed the new denomination of 25 pence:
