1971 was the year the UK adopted decimal coinage. On February 15, the decimal halfpenny, penny and twopence entered circulation, and briefly all our bronze coins looked very clean and bright, like this halfpenny!  |

All remaining British Commonwealth territories and Crown dependencies that still used shillings and pence also switched to decimal currency in 1971, with the exception of Malta and Nigeria, which waited until 1972 and 1973 respectively.
