For some reason I thought this beautiful English 4 pence was from 1696. It's actually dated 1699, so I have two coins for this year.
(Well, one and a half; the other one was specifically posted as to be ambiguous between 1699 and 1700.)

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Eighth-Edition!-We-Need---1366-C.-E.-A.-H.-767-Help-US-John-Conduit! How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Eighth-Edition!-We-Need---1366-C.-E.-A.-H.-767-Help-US-John-Conduit!

Depending on some specifics of the definitions (I couldn't find much detail on the actual laws), this might technically be the oldest coin in my collection that is technically still legal tender.

I apologize for backtracking, but I'm recovering from a computer death and suffering at the mercy of Windows 11 now.

Actually Maundy money is only legal tender back to 1816 when the coins were redesigned and adopted their current specifications.

1697 English halfcrown:
How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Eighth-Edition!-We-Need---1366-C.-E.-A.-H.-767-Help-US-John-Conduit!
1697 was a high mintage year for all English coins, as it was the year of the Great Re-Coinage when all the old pre-1662 hammered coins were withdrawn from circulation.

Interesting coin ... I wouldn;t expect to see a patriarchal cross on the coat of arms there. I wonder what the connection could be?

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole, but perhaps it is because the wife of Phillip of Hesse-Darmstadt (1671-1736) was Princess Marie Ernestine of Croÿ. From wikipedia:

Quote:
This dynastic house, which originally adopted its name from the Château de Crouy-Saint-Pierre in French Picardy, claimed descent from the Hungarian Prince Marc, (if true, he was likely a grandson of Prince Geza) who allegedly settled in France in 1147, where he married an heiress to the barony of Croÿ. The Croÿ family rose to prominence under the Dukes of Burgundy. Later, they became actively involved in the complex politics of France, Spain, Austria, and the Low Countries.
