Photographing this coin is making my head hurt so I'm using these; not great but the best of the bunch. I'm trying to decide on an approximate grade and value to help me divide my collection between my grandchildren. The only reason I would consider TPG would be if it needs conservation. I do see a few brown spots but don't know what they are. I've used the Red Book and PCGS for the grading scale. Looking at the strike I would hope it might rate a 45 I but I don't know how much the surface dings and scratches impact the grade. I believe I see a die crack over one of the stars and I'm not sure what's going on above the E in America. Any thoughts on those questions would be greatly appreciated.

I'll say AU-55, just a stab.

Quote: Where's the wear So your saying the lack of hair details is from a weak strike then?

The reverse rim issue at 10:30 is a concern. Hairlines, if evident, might go as cleaned. Otherwise AU details, maybe AU+.

I'll grade it as AU. Those hairlines are concerning though.

Coin is genuine, unlikely they will call that a die crack. I would have to say details, because it appears to have heavy micro scratches, but gold can be hard to grade sometimes.

AU-50, and that is a die crack on the star. I share the concern about it being cleaned - there are a lot of hairlines.

Thanks to all for the input. I appreciate your time and observations.
I'm glad one of my ancestors took her out of circulation.

AU-53 not cleaned, nor requires conservation. Pretty!

TPG's are way more lenient on gold especially these smaller pieces when it comes to marks, hairlines etc.
technically i'd call it AU55 but might net it down a grade for value. I don't think the coin was cleaned and I do think it would grade straight
