For the record, got a cent in circulation (in change) this morning--a 2011 D as I recall. Alas, it doesn't matter. The curious state of the cent, and the dynamics of inflation, have been around for quite some time.
Would be fitting to have a glorious send-off for the cent at the close of 2025.

Half- and dollar coins are too heavy. We only need nickels, dimes, and quarters IMO.
In fact, I no longer carry any coins in my wallet. Just paper money. And the quarters I need for the laundry machine I get in rolls from the local bank which I store in a kitchen cabinet.

Get rid of the $1 and $2 notes, cent, nickel and quarter and round to the nearest tens. Sounds like a good plan to me. Though I'm curious about the argument for a $2 anything when we've survived without it for so long? (yeah, I know the bill exists but as far as I can tell it's unused) |

Just replace the penny with a 2 cent piece for like 10 years and leave current Pennys in circulation. More and more transactions are digital and by time Pennys start to dwindle in number people would have fully moved on

The only way I'd support the death of the Lincoln Cent is if it were immediately followed by the birth of the Millard Fillmore cent. Dude is the Rodney Dangerfield of presidents.  |

The Americans could greatly reduce the need for pennies if the price labels in shops showed the total price including tax. In the UK if the label says £3.27, I can get that amount of money ready and pay cash. In the USA, if I see a price of $3.27, I haven't a clue how much the final cost will be so I give the cashier a $5 bill.
