is this a good investment?

I'd have to say, almost certainly not.

First off, it's Perth Mint. They don't have a particularly good track record at making "products" that perform well, investment-wise. Many of their "limited mintage coins" don't sell their full mintages, even after a couple of years sitting on the PM website. These coins are one example of this; before it was slabbed in glass, this coin had been sitting on the PM's shelves since 2005.

Second, the mintage of the coin itself isn't limited to 50 - the "coin-entombed-in-glass" is. The coin itself isn't what makes it rare. And, being entombed like that, it's really ceased to be a "coin" and become more of a piece of art. It's future value won't be determined by coin collectors, but by art appreciators.

Thirdly, in my opinion, the ask price is way too high. But then, I've never really appreciated funky modern art.

Buy it if you like the look of it, by all means. But I'm pretty sure it'll be a terrible investment.

G'day & welcome,
the spot price of silver is AUD $18.03/ounce - see link on left of this screen, near top.
this coin retails for $1,560.00, for ten ounces.
So, if silver increases by 765%, you'll break even; and if it goes higher this starts to look like "a good investment".
But I can't see that happening any time soon ...

thanx for the replies guys..
I fully understand that interms of silver content its really expensive. I've made plenty of money off silver proofs in the past from the PM. This one just caught my eye thats all

I'm sure this is a redundant comment, but I'm reminded how many collectibles made as "limited issue" seldom turn out to be valuable. Items that are truly rare or valuable happened that way purely by chance, such as the 1930 penny. But this truth was taken and made into a marketing gimmick, where the "value" of a limited run is tacked onto the issue price. For any "modern collectible," a good question to ask is whether the asking price is a fair representation of value of materials, craftsmanship involved, or actual demand--right now. It's not a critique of the aesthetics, but peeling away layers of marketing to get at the core value. I like the coin design, but not at that price.

Sorry for being in lecture mode--I've just known a few people who have blown $$$$ on "investment-grade" collectibles, never to see that money again.

I agree with all the above. And welcome. You would be far better off spending the money on your car, assuming that's what the SS means.

It's a 1 ounce .999 fine bullion-style coin. The original pre-1933 double-eagle was .900 fine with slightly less than an ounce of gold in it.

hmm.... the USMint FAQ says otherwise....

Perhaps if you try again, it should work.
