*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Sorry for pic. It was the only one available. I often look at buffalos in auctions for any oddities and I came across this one. It has to be a clash of some sort but with what I cannot guess;. On the site, I can blow up the picture but its not clear and it looks like lettering near the E in E Pluribus though I can't tell orientation. There is also this big loop under the buffalo that appears to be slightly raised. Has anyone seen something like this? Edited by Seeker_101 09/04/2024 7:10 pm

It doesn't match the listing. That listing shows vertical parallel to the E. This runs horizontal under USA to the E and there's even something with the F of OF and the first A in America. As far as the obverse, it a normal looking 1937.
Edit: original post edited to provide larger picture.

Sorry, I was looking at it wrong.... Maybe a floating die clash?

I've been messing with this one for awhile and the area north looks pretty close to the part in the hair from the obverse, but cannot make sense of what is in the lower area at the legs. See what you think. This would be a rotated die clash, if this were the case. LINK https://www.error-ref.com/rotated-d...tional-type/

It looks like a Die Clash to me.
Errers and Varietys.

@ makecents: That might be the answer. I'll be watching this one and if it stays reasonable I'll pick it up. Buffalos and Indian Heads tend to go for well over what they are worth.

Bid is $2 with $5 shipping but a long way to go before the end. Prices tend to jump dramatically in the last hour. The nickel is part of a 3 nickel lot - 1935, 1936, 1937. But there are several other lots I am watching in this auction as well so shipping cost could get spread over multiple lots.

The lower part looks like a die clash. A shallow, incuse feature with a sharply defined edge. The top feature looks raised, not incuse.
An easy way to check if it's a rotated die is to compare the staple position on the flip images, if that's possible. I did run across a rotated buffalo clash the other week, but it was an early date in XF/AU and I got nuked on the final bidding.

Quote: The top feature looks raised, not incuse. I could be totally wrong about what it even is, but that area would be raised, if it's from the area I am talking about. This area that I am referring to would be raised on the obverse die, if it clashed with the reverse die, it would create a recessed area on the reverse die, in turn making it raised on the coin, when struck.

We'll get a better look at this coin. I should have it in hand by the end of the week.
