Here's a picture of my 1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent. A cool variation of the mintage.

I never understood how this happened. Did a part of the die just break off in the shape of a triangle?

I've seen this shape of mark on other coin series, such as IHCs where it was caused by a file stroke on the die.
Sometime when a die clash gets repaired, part of the design gets hit by the edge of a file--or so I've heard.
I'm not sure of the cause here, but I sure like this variety--nice coin!

The spiked chin is believed to have been created when the dies came together on a planchet and a small bolt. The head of the hardened steel bolt created the spike at the chin while the threads from the bolt left marks in the field of the dies. The marks from the threads are clearly visible in this C-6 from Coinfacts. Once you know what to look for they are also visible on the OP coin as well.

Wow!! I assumed the spaced scratches on the right of this Half Cent were from wear, not from the original minting. Thanks Condor101! You rock!

Amazing cool, cool stuff!!

Very nice coin, Moe. I am in the market, and keeping my eyes open for one as well. I only hope that someday I can find one as nice as yours.

I don't think many of the large/and Half Cents are really expensive. (There are some exceptions...) Very fun to collect too!
