I'll start by saying I'm pretty new to the hobby and this is my first post, so please go easy on me.

I found this nickel in a roll and it immediately stuck out. It has spots on both sides that are shiny copper that appear to be underneath a nickel layer. The edge of the coin has distinct toning and copper showing almost completely around. I realize that nickels aren't clad, and are a solid nickel/copper alloy. That's why I'm here, is because it looks very much like a clad layer that flaked or peeled off with a copper core underneath. My first thought was corrosion, but how would that only eat through the outermost metal AND bring just the copper to the surface? Same with the edge, which has a yellowish, darker hue to it and looks like solid copper for a lot of the circumference. Also, the rest of the surface wouldn't indicate being buried or similar environmental damage.

Could it possibly be poor annealing? Improper alloy mixture? Planchets were cut from the wrong sheets of metal that was intended for a different coin? Or is this common corrosion damage and I should just forget about it and go about my day?

To CCF! Just seeing environmental damage on this one. PMD. Could have been in a dirty cup holder.

Thanks guys! Appreciate it. I'm gonna have to dig deeper to see what would target just the nickel and leave the copper behind as far as corrosion goes. Kinda cool, actually.

Just remember that Jefferson nickels are comprised of 75% Copper. Depending on the alloy mix, the copper can sometimes migrate to the surface.
