I continue to be astounded at the prices people will pay for the rare modern varieties. 40 bids in that auction, final price of $2400. Population of 7 at MS65, with only 6 higher. I know that the 1942-D / Horizontal D is one of the most sought-after Jefferson nickel varieties, but that's still just remarkable to me.

too much for my wallet.

With the exception of 2 coins in my collection, my collection will never achieve a high value on each coin separately, now combined, it may be a different thing..

And still tied for the lowest price among the other 12 auction results shown on the PCGS CoinFacts MS64 to MS66 (that other lowball was MS65) - https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...ntal/4015/65

I assume that this had to be a registry set purchase. Sensible assumption or not?

The part that I don't completely understand is the scratching and clawing that goes on for a single point change in grade (typically at MS65 vs. 66, or at MS66 vs. 67). From an overall points perspective, it seems much more efficient to focus on set completeness rather than individual coin point values. Adding a single new coin at AU 50 is 50x more valuable than advancing a single coin from MS65 to MS66. Isn't it? Or do I not properly understand the scoring system? The PCGS registry set scoring seems very different from NGC scoring, where the higher grades get proportionally more points.

The high grades demand premium. I'd be happy owning a AU grade for lesser price.
