I have had this 1858 Flying Eagle cent in my collection for a long time. I really like the coin, but I have always wondered what is going on with the back of the coin. Is this some kind of error with how it was minted or some kind of damage? The "RIC" in "AMERICA" on the front are also worn/smashed away on the opposite side of the "divot".

@coin first welcome to CCF. Second, that divot is mechanical damage, which has caused flattening in the front of the coin.

Some kind of puncture damage on the obverse pushing the metal through and flattening the reverse.
