Do the designer's initials on the reverse appear correct on this 1989 cent?

I can't tell for sure from your photo but I do know there is a variety where the 1989 has the FG of 1988 and vis-versa.On the 89 the G has a little tail at the bottom and on the 88 no tail just a round bottom.

Hmmm, looks interesting. Sent it to James Wiles and you'll know for sure.

I don't believe the variety works both ways. The transitional variety is a 1988-RDV-006, which means it would be a 1988 cent with with the reverse die of 1989.

Check out this thread on CONECA (link starts in middle of discussion):

http://board.conecaonline.org/showt...?t=68&page=5

In this thread Dr. Wiles says that he de-listed the 1989-DDV-005 (1989 with reverse of 1988) from CONECA. Oh, if you read forward in that thread, you will see that brefos77 found a 1988-RDV-006.

Still lookin, it does look like there is a serif on the bottom of the "G", which would be a clue that it is correct for 1989. You might get more views from the variety folks here if this thread were moved to the "Variety and Error" section of the forum.

I did send him the photos'. I did see where it was actually listed the first time that one had been found, but did not see where it was de-listed. I will keep looking for both the 1988 and 1989. Who knows? Might find one of either. I would think that if these were produced (either year) that not many people would have been looking. Most of this type error, IMO, would still be in circulation.
