1992 Toned 5c Double Rim - Coin Community Forum

Lexrexcoin1 New Member Australia 2 Posts	Posted 10/13/2024 04:06 am I've come across an 1992 5c coin, about unirculated, in a consistent deep brown/black tone. Could this be original or perhaps environmental impact? Attached photos of a regular 5c of the same year for comparison. Have noted a slight-double rim on the left side of the portrait. I will place a mark for reference. Haven't seen a coin like this before. Would be greatly appreciated if anyone could give some insight! Thank-you. Report this Post to the Staff

spru Bedrock of the Community United States 12477 Posts	Posted 10/13/2024 04:16 am The color is most likely due to environmental exposure (e.g. being in the ground). The double rim is caused by a slightly misaligned die on the obverse. These are both common phenomena. There is a possibility that the color is due to mint error in a similar fashion to American "Black Beauty" nickels, but I'm not familiar with the prevalence, if any, of that in these coins.
