Here's a 1981 p Jefferson nickel that I found in my spare change actually I have two of them this one seems like the better one. I read what they're worth a couple of dollars because of the filled in p mint mark and in God we trust touching the rim. They have to be in good shape for it to be worth something. I believe this is a good looking nickel. I really wouldn't want to put a grade on it cuz I don't know what I'm doing LOL. So what's the hype with this coin? Ty

Considerable Die Deterioration on that nickel, evidenced by the metal movement in the fields. That phenomenon is often called orange peel texture.

There is nothing particularly valuable about a filled mint mark. People post those on ebay all the time as if it is something rare and precious, but it's quite common on 1970s and 1980s coins. Sometimes the filled mint mark is caused by a broken post on the die, because that little spike of metal gets crushed quickly when minting coins. Other times, die wear just smooths out the post, or circulation wear smooths over the tiny hole on the coin.

I know devices touching the rim can increase the value of off center strikes and misaligned die strikes. I don't know if the value increases when the touching is caused by Die Deterioration.

No premium. I'd keep it as a good example of Die Deterioration.

a Very VERY worn out die as noted by the extreme radial flow lines on the fields.
Also a filled MM is common on older dies, as the post broke off.
