The original ticket with this coin had the obverse legend as; IMP C M AVR ANTONINVS, and the reverse legend as; ANTIOCH GEN COL C A. The reverse legend is as stated, but the obverse legend actually reads; IMP C M AVR ANTONI AV. There was no reference.

I can't find a Caracalla coin with a Genius reverse in the RPC database. Checking ACSearch revealed around forty similar coins, but none where the obverse and reverse matched exactly. Any help is appreciated.

I'm seeing what look like visual (iconography and legend) matches on ACsearch.info, but their descriptions have the goddess as Tyche and the reverse legends ending with "CAE" despite the fact that the illustrated coins clearly end in "CA" like yours. Some examples:

I don't know how you do it, Bob, but both examples are matches for the OP coin. The diameters and weights also tie in.

It does seem strange that both of the example reverse legends are said to end in CAE, when as you say, they clearly end in CA! I can understand that it could be a typo in one case, but two coins from two different auction houses?

The stance of the goddess is a familiar one on Tyche reverses, however there is the GEN in the reverse legend. (On other similar reverses it is GENI.) Perhaps an abbreviation for something else? I can't think what though.

In any case, it would appear that the coin reference is BMC 41.

Thanks again, Bob.

A quick update.

There is one coin on Wildwinds that I missed previously where the goddess is actually named as "female Genius". The accompanying text reads:

Quote:
Caracalla AE22 of Antioch, Pisidia, AD 198-217.
IMP C M AVR ANTONI AV, laureate head right.
ANTIOCH GEN COL CA, female genius standing left, holding branch and cornucopiae.
SNG Cop 44
With permission of cngcoins.com, the AK collection sale.

The obverse and reverse legends are the same as the OP coin, the bust of Caracalla and the figure of the goddess is similar as is the diameter. The only difference is that the G of "GEN" is to the left of the head of Genius.

I'm happy that the correct attribution for the OP coin is indeed BMC 41.
