I have a very nice Trade dollar that was sent back from ANACS as "Counterfeit. Struck Copy". I would like to post a boatload of pictures for diagnostics - for others who may be wishing to purchase one of these beautiful coins. The question is: what parts of the coin should I zoom in on for diagnostics? I could just take really huuuuge pics so we could zoom in any part we need to... If Swamperbob is around, I'd like him to weigh in as well.. please? Interestingly, this coin has been on the forum previously, but was never flagged as a possible counterfeit... which is why I'd like to post some pictures of it, and give a good view of this particular version of a struck copy. Then again, there is always the possibility ANACS was wrong Edited by xshift 05/11/2009 10:21 pm

My limited understanding is that common diagnostic areas on the obverse are Liberty's hair where it is tied behind her head in a bun and the denticles. On the reverse, the eagle's eye. Sorry about your coin Ken

Yeah, definitely. Trade dollars are being highly counterfeited. Although I'm not an expert when it comes to Trade dollars, and would have to consult the books on diagnostics, I'm sure there are members that collect these. Sorry to hear about that but, with all the Trade dollars the TPG's see on a daily basis, I'm sure more than a few are counterfeit thanks to China.

A coin dealer that I met an auction has one. He showed it to me when I went to the winter coin show here in my area. The weight, width, and thickness were all in the ball park for being the real McCoy. However, the silver content was around 35%. PCGS had rejected the coin for this. I did not know that alloy analysis was one of the things that they do to verify authenticity, but according to him they do it for high end coins.

Here is a comparison photo: ![Counterfeit-Trade-Dollar-[pics-Added]](http://www.tradedollarnut.com/Home%20Page/Home%20first%20links/dates/1876/1876truview.jpg) A little more on diagnostics: Quote:A real Trade dollar will weigh 27.22 grams. A couple of tenths less for a worn coin. There are 3 main ways to tell a fake. 1st. The ribbon curls behind ladies head will have holes, where the metal was chipped out of the dies. 2nd. The eagles eye will be full. 3rd. The reeds on the rim will be close together. On a real coin, the eagles eye will be incused or half shut, if you will. http://reviews.ebay.com/Fake-U-S-Tr...000000049445I think to weigh it is the first check. The others are pretty tough to tell in my opinion. Stinks...

nice job there.
Interesting strike and the denticles look convincing. The reeding is also well done.

I'm certainly not a counterfeit pro, but the areas that look suspect to me are the spot on Liberty's left knee and the area above the second "T" in states. Also some of the letters look off. Like the F in OF and the A in DOLLAR.

I have to agree. I will probably have to find and crack a slab if I ever want to fill that hole in the 7070.
