Hey all,

I recently acquired a PCGS sample slab. These are totally new to me. I read some people collect these but are they really worth anything? Alone the coin is only like 15$, but supposedly in this sample case it's worth more? Anyone have any insights into the history of this?

The coin in that grade it is valued at $6 according to http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm
People do pay a premium for the old-style slab.
What did you pay?

These are samples. They are not meant to have real gems in them. I assume the TPG just pulls a decent one out of their pocket.

Why were these sample slabs issued in the first place? Just for advertising?

Maybe? I assumed they were used to test the product, especially when the holder was changed or improved. Then they are distributed to dealers (no charge) as a way to encourage submissions.
