I was wondering if cents that have fingerprints or green junk on them can affect another coin in a roll or tube. I assume the fingerprint is oil from the skin or something that evetually causes the fingerprint to stand out on a cent and look black. Basically can this oil or whatever this is transfer to a penny next to it in a coin tube?
G'day & welcome, I don't think that that is a "stupid question". The oil from the skin is sebum. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebum It can react with some metals, which is why some collectors wear gloves when handling coins. Coins affected by sebum, or any other reactive substance, can transfer this to any other coins with which they have contact. Which is why most of us keep our most valuable coins in individual storage, such as the 2x2 system. Peter in Australia
I think they do... especially the green verdigris (I think that's what it's called). I had a green cent on top of one of my quarters, and after a few years (found them again) the quarter where it contacted the verdigris was turning green...
