Does not look good to me, looks very altered. A genuine 3 legged Buffalo in this condition would probably be worth ( quick guesstimate ) $1400.00 The bottom half ( the hoof ) looks abrupt. I think I see tooling marks in front of the area in the field. E Pluribus Unum is not supposed to be that close to the back of the Buffalo. The back leg looks too healthy, and I don't see the raised dots that trail under to belly toward front legs to the ground. Here's mineReverse ( compare areas I mentioned on both reverses.) Wonder what that 1877 IHC looks like?

There seems to be a mark by the leg, could be altered. I wouldn't chance it.

When buying a coin of that value online I would go for the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS encapsulated coins. Just to be safe. There is nothing worse than getting ripped off.

I was at the ANA seminar in Portland a few weeks back and that is defintely an altered coin. It is NOT a genuine three-legged Buffalo. The ANA instructor was very emphatic that there has to be lines underneath the buffalo that make it seem like he's urinating. He told us that the hard and fast rule is: "If the leg is missin', the buffalo must be pissin'." I hope this language isn't too crude for the forum, but it's exactly what the ANA instructor said.

with wheezydog. From what I understand the 'E Pluribus Unum' is the confirmation. Too close.

thank you all, these are some real good arguments to stay away from it. will not bid and in future will stick to Canadian Coins. It is a lot easier and safer. HHB

altered coin.
Easy, look under the belly, no 'dribble marks'.

Here's what I found on the net: (Difference between the normal & the 3 Leg) a) The beard on the right side is longer than the beard on the left side. b) The right rear leg is very weak and appears almost damaged. c) There should be no file or polish marks in the area where the leg is missing. *The words "Pluribus and Unum" are separated from the back of the Buffalo Here's my coin. (I don't see the "dribble" much but the "E Pluribus Unum" are far from the back, and the right rear leg looks undeveloped so I'm remaining convinced it's a good one (Not cherry but...) Thoughts?

Moe, like I stated earlier in the thread, the hard and fast rule is: "If the leg is missin', the buffalo must be pissin'." That comes directly from an ANA instructor at a coin seminar. If there is no dribble, it is not a genuine 3 Leg Buffalo.

I agree there's little if no dribble, but the rear leg is definitely degraded and the "E Pluribus Unum" is displaced. (There is wear on this coin versus yours...)
I think the coin is still authentic...
Thoughts?

Just additional info: Here's a 3 Leg Buffalo graded F15 by PCGS. (I don't see dribble on this one.) But it's real...

I was a bit concerned there for a minute but I now believe mine is authentic. Just worn. I also DON"T think the above (original) Nickel is authentic. The rear leg and the "E Pluribus Unum" are wrong. It also appears to have marks near the missing leg (From a tool that removed the leg).
