This penny is driving me crazy! lol
I can't seem to match it up fully to any of the RPMs listed on VV or Wexler's, but the mint mark does not look right.

Here are some pics, various lighting/angles.
Note: The last pic is an alternate 1984-D penny for comparison.

Is this a RPM?

Looks like the very beginning of zinc bubbling around mint mark.

@ErrersandVarietys - I guess Machine Doubling would make sense, but would MD be that defined/prevalent on the Mint Mark, yet nowhere else on the coin? It looks like two mint marks on top of each other, 2 clear layers.

@oddguy - Zinc rot, well there's a reply I didn't see coming lol I don't see any zinc rot here. There is some smushed die to the right of the mint mark. There's also remanence of die to the left by the top and bottom portion of the D. The center is also filled. Unsure if this would be due to a re-punch or if there's a die gouge/chip right in the center?

I believe this is likely Machine Doubling as well.

It's not unusual to see Machine Doubling solely on the mintmark given it was punched into the die by hand (meaning the mintmark could be set deeper into the die than the rest of the design). In some series, like the silver Washington quarters, Machine Doubling restricted to the mintmark is actually relatively common.

Machine Doubling can occur on just 1 device or any number of devices.
