AMHERST, Wis. (WAOW) — Portage County investigators need your help to solve a break-in and theft.

On October 31, a burglar broke into a home on Main Street in Amherst and ripped off thousands of dollars worth of coins, said Mike Lukas, Portage County Sheriff.

Ouch.

Looks like a modest collection, but I have to assume the sentimental value is much higher.

Yes, and nothing particularly distinctive by itself that would serve as a red flag to potential buyers.
The report doesn't mention if other items were stolen or only the coin collection. If the latter, it was probably someone who knew that the person had these coins, and the culprit can possibly be identified.
Hopefully this miscreant will be apprehended and incarcerated and the coins returned to the owner.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
