What is going on with the 'connector' from EPU to the buffalo's back?
I can't come up with an answer.

Yes, on the die clash, it actually looks like 2 clashes a few degrees off from each other, it is a fairly typical position offset just a bit from the nice overlay images. The tilted V shape on the EPU comes raised fields on the obverse die under the chin and neck.

On the obverse under the chin you can often see parts of the EPU lettering, there is a hint of it remaining in your very nice example but mostly it has been filed/polished away as they try to remove the evidence and get a longer life from the dies. That filing/polishing sure leads to some interesting varieties, thanks for sharing the nice example.
