Some sort of foreign substance caked on the reverse? Or just damage?

Yes, appears to be some crud involved--possibly on the obverse as well. A long soak in 100% acetone might yield interesting results.

I agree. Might be worth an acetone soak—for educational value, if you want to experiment. Otherwise, spend it.
