It's missing the nickel color, its copper colored. Is this a minting error?

When you were cropping and so on with your pics you flipped the reverse, it's backwards. Now that would be and error!

Sometimes if you heat up a nickle until it glows orange with torches then let it cool down it acquires a dark color like yours.

The color is likely from environmental damage. Coins can take on many different colors when exposed to environmental factors.

environmental toning can change the color of a coin. Remember that a nickel consists of 75% copper.
