This is the thing I'm most afraid of metal detecting. Obviously no one goes metal detecting in a graveyard, but no one really knows if there are skeletons buried somewhere, out on a field, farm, woods, swimming hole, etc. Hopefully nothing nefarious, but even an unmarked grave would unsettle nerves greatly. As familiar metal detecting grounds get exhausted and with folks venturing out farther afield, I assume this is more of a possibility. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but just curious. Thanks.

Luckily I don't have a "Human Remains" setting on my detector.

I've detected on the site of an old English village that was occupied from about 700AD until the 1340s and then abandoned due to the Black Death. The only remains are a few lumps of rubble from the church. I went as part of an organised party and the organiser warned that we might find human remains as the former graveyard had been ploughed up centuries ago and the farmer who owned the site sometimes came across bones. I spent a day there and found nothing identifiable as human remains - there were small, powdery broken bits of bones in the soil but they could have equally well have been from farm animals.

It's just a possible hazard of the job. The old stuff wouldn't bother me too much. However, finding a recent buriel might be a little bit disturbing. I'd just have the county authorities phone number handy just-in-case!

I'd be more concerned about running into Hill Billies. Ever see the movie Deliverance? That's a fun thought.
